Today there is no shortage of options for greeting cards from standard printed to pop-up ones, from mass-produced to handmade, and they come in a variety of styles. It’s so natural for us to buy or send a card on special occasions that not many people think about how come they got so popular? Let’s find out together!

The custom of exchanging greeting cards was introduced in Ancient China and Egypt with the early Egyptians giving each other scarabs inscribed “all good luck” to celebrate the New Year. The early 15th century saw the appearance of handmade cards in Europe. Valentine’s Day cards have been sold and exchanged there since the 1400s! By the 1850s, greeting cards had stopped to be a luxurious, hand-delivered gift for the elite and turned into a popular means of celebrating personal connections. This was to a great extent due to the advanced printing and the introduction of postal stamps that lead to reduced postal rates. Soon new trends appeared; an artist hired by Sir Henry Cole introduced a Christmas card.

Postcards originated in Austria on October 1, 1869. The initiative proved to be a success, and they soon spread to France, England, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Denmark. The first Soviet postcard goes back to November 1917. Originally, its back cover was designed for specifying only the address, so there was no special place for the wording. The modern version was introduced in 1904. Industrial color printing gave a new impetus to the manufacturing of greeting cards, and three quarts a century later we still enjoy expressing love and affection by exchanging them.

The first site with e-cards was launched in 1994 and gained momentum rapidly. Directly emailable greeting cards followed and became extremely widespread in a couple of years. Since then, the technologies have been constantly changing, bringing flash animated cards, video cards, and some cards even contain interactive games.

It’s been a long way, but the purpose of cards has always been the same – to celebrate meaningful connections and make our special people happy. SEVAZH is proud to offer a wide selection of seasonal and everyday e-cards on any occasion, and we are now working on flash animated and video cards.
